What Happens During an MOT?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport test) is an annual inspection that checks whether your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. At GW Auto Repairs, our qualified testers carry out a thorough inspection that includes:

  • Lighting and Signalling Equipment – Headlights, indicators, brake lights

  • Steering and Suspension – Checking wear, leaks, and control

  • Brakes – Performance test using a rolling road

  • Tyres and Wheels – Tread depth, condition, and size

  • Seatbelts and Seats – Operation and condition

  • Windscreen, Wipers, and Washers – Visibility and effectiveness

  • Exhaust System and Emissions – Checking for leaks and emissions compliance

  • Bodywork and Structure – Rust, damage, and sharp edges

  • Registration Plates and VIN – Visibility and correctness

You’ll receive either:

  • VT20 Pass Certificate – Your vehicle meets the minimum legal standard

  • VT30 Failure Document – Explains reasons for failure and advisories

If your car fails, we explain the issues clearly and offer repairs on-site with your approval. A free retest is available within 10 working days.

Why MOTs Matter

  • It’s the law – All vehicles over 3 years old must have a valid MOT

  • Safety – Identifies issues before they become dangerous

  • Insurance & Legal Protection – Driving without an MOT can invalidate insurance and result in fines up to £1,000

  • Emissions Compliance – Helps reduce pollution and protects the environment

Did you know?...

  • Nearly 30% of vehicles fail their MOT on the first attempt (DVSA, 2023)

  • Lighting and signalling faults are the most common cause of MOT failure

  • Over 600,000 MOTs are conducted weekly in the UK

  • Our Carlisle garage is fully equipped with the latest MOT testing lanes, and all checks are performed by qualified testers with decades of experience.
